New place to live

We moved into our new house last weekend. All went well, with the help of a number of fantastic friends from both Nicki and I's work. Pictures of the new house, are now up in the Family 2 photo album, for those that have the password.

We managed to get everything over in 2 runs. Although the truck was by no means full on either load, it saved us having to worry about stacking things correctly.

From the open home to moving in was completed inside a month! Not bad going eh?

Thursday

Georgia had gone to the mall today with her friend and dad was at work. So me and Alex were at home alone because mom was at a funeral, I'm not sure who's i think it was one of her patients, so me and Alex tidied the house up so dad can let the owner know that people can come around and see if they want to rent the house.

When mom got back she said we had done a good job and took us out for a drink. We all had a Wendy's. Wendy's is like a milkshake place that does, jellies, ice-cream, hot dogs, things like that. I had a small white chocolate and raspberry mega shake, Alex had a small cookies and cream mega shake. They are milkshakes of the flavor you want and then a blob of that ice-cream flavor too. Mom had a small cookies and cream thickest shake ever. Which is a really thick milkshake of the flavor you want. Mom's straw was very big and wide! For smalls, they weren't actually that small they were quiet big! Then we got in the car to go get Georgia. When we got Georgia we drove past our new house that we are buying and it still looks fab!
I cant wait to move in.

When we got home Georgia had shown me the DVD she had bought which was Dirty Dancing so we watched it. It was really good! Then mom went and got dad and we had tea.

Well Georgia wants computer now

Wednesday

Today i went Horse riding with Georgia. Georgia goes riding anyways but today it was a junior day, so Georgia took me. Georgia was a leader there. First We brushed the horses, them cleaned out that hooves (the hooves were very smelly), after the hooves we watched one of the leaders show us how to put the saddle on and bridle on then she went and did some walks, trots, rising trots and canters around the arena. She was very good. It was then Lunch. Me and Georgia just had a buttered bread roll, everyone else had loads. This one girl had, sushi, popcorn, pita bread, yogurt, apple, juice....and so on, which made me and Georgia look very stupid.

After lunch we put the saddles and bridles on then walked our horses into the arena. My horse was called Prince Charles, but everyone calls him Charlie. I got on the horse after walking it around. Georgia lead him around all the poles, then she decided to still hold onto the rope but not lead him and i had to turn him, it was really fun. Then we all had a 10 minuet break.

The riding instructor told me I might need to go on a different saddle because that saddle wasn't making me sit up properly, so she decided to get her saddle out and put me on Peanut because the girl who was on Peanut wanted to go on Charlie. So she put her saddle on Peanut for me.

After the break I was on Peanut. Peanut was much less fidgety so i had a very smooth ride as charlie always shook his head and stopped all the time. It was very easy to lead Peanut. After a while i could feel peanut getting faster and so could Georgia even though i was leading the horse and Georgia was just holding the rope it in case. Peanut really wanted to trot.

The riding instructor was teaching everyone how to trot by clipping some rope onto the horses bridle and letting the horses trot in a circle, She missed me out by accident, but later when it was time to all come out of the arena and put the horses back she let me and a little boy still ride. The little boys horse was Sam and the little girls horse was Smokey. Smokey and Sam were annoying each other and starting cantering after each other, so the little girl and boy kept trying to hold on and stop them. It happened two times. The little boy fell of on both times but the girl fell off only the once, so the riding instructor let the girl have a ride with all of us then take all the horses out and let the boy have a ride on his own, but she left me in there I'm not sure why. I was weaving in and out of the tire's and pole's.

I kicked Peanut to make her go faster then we started trotting, It was really fun because i hadn't been taught how to. I'm very proud of me and Peanut now. We carried on trotting and i eventually got her to trot even going through the tire's and pole's. It was so fun, I wish to join horse riding :D

well love you all xxx

Tuesday

Well, today we didn't do much. I just started packing my suitcase even though we have 3 weeks and its not certain that we are moving in yet, got to check house and get muney of bank and all that. I'm just soo excited. So yeah, just packed suitcase, watched t.v, not much actually, played with Alex on trampoline, taught him how to do somersaults in the air with no hands. He learnt that pretty quick. Well I've just watched Austin Powers and it was absolutely hilarious! It was very funny, and now that its finished Georgia and I are going to watch Titanic in the lounge and grab the duvets and pillows so that we can sleep in the lounge, we are going to have the dogs but eventually put them in there baskets.

Must go now Titanic is starting

First day

Yo,

Its the first day of our holidays today and we haven't done much. I woke up from the ring of the phone and then realised the dogs were howling like werewolves, mom and dad had already left for work by now. I picked up the phone to hear Georgia's horse riding teacher on the other side. She needed to speak to Georgia so i had to wake Georgia up, Georgia had to shake her head before talking :D We then let the dogs in the bedroom and we all fell back asleep. After about half an hour me and Alex woke up again, So I took the dogs for a toilet break outside, of course I had to use a lead as the dog next door barks and set them all off, I couldnt find a lead so I used my belt from my dressing gown :D I took Toffee then Sherbert. Georgia was still in bed so Alex watched t.v then I went on computer, after a while Georgia woke up and started cooking something so me and Alex went on the trampoline. Mom rang to check if we weere ok. When Georgia finished cooking, we had a really nice cooked brunch.
* * *
We watched t.v went on trampoline, computer...
it was a fun day
Georgia made us some pancakes with bananas and caramel/toffee sort of juice. It was so yummy, you should ask Georgia for the recipe it was very delicous, and clever, since she didint use eggs.

* * *
Dad got home, so me and Alex came back inside from trampoline and cuddled him.

* * *
Now as most of you may already know, we went looking at houses yesterday and we finally went to one that mom just fell in love with on the photo, it as sooo muc better off the photo, it has lots of grass and its such a cute house, it has a seperate hut for laundry and a seperate garage. It is such a cute house, Its made of wood, it has one lounge, a kitchen, 2 double bedrooms (mine and alexs) and 2 master bedrooms (mom, dads and georgias) and theres a bathroom with the toilet in it, and a little room that we will probally put bookcase in or brown sofa, and theres a chicken house that stays with the house, so as u can see now yes we have put an offer on it. It is soooo amazing, I love it!

well ill try write every day

Chick chick chicken

I found a picture of our two girls to share with you. They are Barred Rock hens. They came with a free rooster, but we had him for tea one night.....yummy! The one on the right is our current champion layer, but she has gone broody and is sitting on 16 eggs! Not quite sure how she covers them all, but we think some may hatch in a few weeks.

hi guys

it is awesome in nz but it is better in engaland

Nearly a year!

Hello everyone. Thanks for all your messages.
Its seems odd to be getting lots of anniversary wishes, as I have always associated the 28th as being our anniversary. You guys naturally pick the day we left whilst I pick the day we arrived - lol

But does that mean I have lost 2 days or does that mean we have 2 anniversaries? Perhaps not, the kids will be wanting to go to Monkey Spices on the one day and Corrianders on the next.... ;)

The great kiwi invite

In a major new tourism venture, Kiwi's are being given the chance to invite friends and family who live abroad to New Zealand.

The ‘Great Kiwi Invite’ campaign, run by Tourism New Zealand, aims to increase the number of visitors to the country at a time when global economic conditions mean fewer people are travelling the world.

New Zealanders will be able to go on-line and send a personal animated invitation to someone overseas. When the invitation is accepted, the person will go into a draw to win one of 15 trips for two to New Zealand, flying from any Air New Zealand port.

Keep an eye on your inbox!

New Videos uploaded

I've updated some videos over the weekend. Only 98 to wade through edit an upload! I think I've done about 6 or 7 so far, including a couple of Alex rock climbing and some of Abi opening Birthday presents. More to come but its a bit of a chore shortening 10 to 15 mins of video into 2 or 3 mins to make it upload to google.

7.8 quake, largest to hit New Zeland since 1931

Nope the earth didn't move for us!

Despite reports of New Zealand's biggest earthquake since 1931 being felt in Christchurch, we didn't feel a thing. The shallow 7.8 quake in the lower area of South Island (several hundred km away) sparked a confirmed tsunami, but there are currently no reports of injury. There was also a 6.1 aftershock. You can follow the latest news on at www.nzweather.net or checkout the usual online media.

Holiday ads

Winter is usually the time of year for holiday adverts on the TV, well in New Zealand its no exception. This series from Malaysian Tourism was on when we first arrived. It was hauntingly spiritual and the music still makes my spine tingle when I hear it. Well worth a watch, although I wish the sound was better on this example.

Family Album 2

We have a new family ablum. This is because we have reached the 500 photo limit in the first one. Please email grant if you want the URL for access for Family 2.

Castle Rock

What a find! We had spotted some pictures on the facebook page of one of Nicki's work colleagues and vowed to make the effort to go for ourselves. It was a great Saturday afternoon, shortly after the first sprinkling of snow for the season. The boulder formation is just outside the Porters Pass ski resort and is about an hours drive away, so we slipped out after dropping Georgia off and finishing the morning grocery shop.

We had a picnic when we arrived of hot soup and crusty bread, with fruit and biscuits and watched teh small groups of people bouldering before we set off. The soup was welcoming as there was a chill to the air out of the sun. We spent a couple of hours there, walking and climbing the different formations. We'll definately go again. Pictures can be found on the Castle Rock Ablum

Well you know how i have been asking all of you to give me a story to write well i thought and thought and i came up with something. I'm not going to tell you what its about but i can tell you, we did it for school. It had to be handed in, so when i handed mine in my teacher said very well done.

A couple of days later i forgot where it was so i asked my teacher if he had it and he said yes - (it was on the very top of the pile) - he told me it was on the top of the pile because i was in the top 4 to win a prize or win the story competition- so now i cant wait to see if I'm 1st, 2nd or 3rd!

well must go bye bye bye xx - ill tell more soon =)

School Dentist/Eye site

Hi,

Today at school, i had an 'eye test', the lady said i was very good and i don't think i made any mistakes, after that i had the dentist. The dentist said i had spacey teeth which was very good and they were good and clean, and I'm good with my tooth brush, she also said that they were so lovely that she didn't need to take an x-ray but because i was year 8 she had to. She also she gave me a letter to say i needed to go to the Orthodontist for braces, - this is bad, its bad enough with a birthday coming up and trying to by a house, we don't need to spend $2000 or how ever much it is for a piece of metal in my mouth! - mom is going to ring to see how much they are first. I think I'm going to have to have them because Ive been told to in England as well! but money doesn't grow on tree's people!

I'm also not sure if i told you all this but, yesterday me and Alex got another cactus, we had one in England but we weren't allowed to bring it over here so nan has them. My fish is good and healthy i think :D

well must go now

Email Issues

We've had some problems with email this week. Email has been getting through to the server, but was not being delivered to us. I did some testing with the UK email addresses and found the problem.

As a result our NZ email is back to normal. Nothing here has been lost, although there was a delay in us getting your email.

The UK addresses however, will be offline for around 5 days. This is because I have to wait for google to purge the information from the testing account I created, before I can add them back into normal service. True, I could put more time and effort into this and transfer the server to get them running, before transferrring them back again next week, but seeing as its only a historic account, I'm going to wait the 5 days.

Fishing day

During March there was a junior fishing event aimed at getting younger people into the sport. Bait, rods and equipment were provided along with a freshly stocked pool.

It was a great day, with celebrities from the TV fishing programs and competitions, although there were times when having 3 kids present knotted lies to you simultaneously was a bit frustrating! We didn't catch anything but saw others who did - Salmon and Trout!

Some laid back pics are in the Family Album of the boys and girls having a go for themselves. Oh and we did get a little perk.... everyone packed up and went, leaving us with 3 kids rods that we weren't able to hand back... oh well!

Rock climbing

Alex the super man (or should that be the spider man?) has taken up rock climbing. He has just completed a 10 week course aimed at teaching him how to "top rope belay". This means he is now licensed to climb with others of his own age. He will be joining the Flying Gecko's climbing club in the new term and he is now the very proud owner of his very own chalk bag, which he bought with some of his birthday money.

Again there are some pics in the family gallery and videos to follow.

Jods and a helmet

Georgia started horse riding a little while back. She goes to a place that teaches natural horsemanship, which is a really big thing here in New Zealand. She seems to be really into it at the moment, and stays for the day to help out and learn handling skills and preparing tack, grooming etc. The owner is off to the US in a couple of weeks for a 6 week holiday/conference so Georgia and the girls are looking after the Saturday people who want to keep thier hand in with some riding.

Soon after she started, she tapped Nanny up for some money towards a helmet. She was very lucky in that prices are a little cheaper for equipment here, so she was able to get boots and jods into the bargain. Her "little fashion shoot" pictures are in the family album - you can't miss them ;)

Social

Every year the school holds a social (or a disco)
the theme was tight white and bright (i just wore white jeans and a bright top and all that )
then when we get there u have to answer a question to prove u go to lincoln, so i didn't know this and didn't expect them to ask me what house i'm in so I jsut stood there for ages going, uuuummmm and then I remembered so that was lucky
I went with my friends Yasmin Shikah and Annie and the music and dancing was really cool and there was lots of people. The school photographer came and took a photo of us near the end when we were all shiny and messy hair, urgh why don't they do it at the start? lol Then we took Yasmin back and got ready for the next day at school :) we were all pretty tired after dancing from 7-10 !

Youth Group

Hi,

Youth Group:
Every Friday night at the community centre, there is a youth group, it is soooo fun. Last week we had to make bridges out of news paper and it had to hold a ball. So with my group we rolled up news paper and they made MY DESIGN :D and of course it was mine so as always, when its my idea, we won! We put 3 rolled up news paper sticks diaganol from each other and taped them together for the legs we made 4 sets of them, then we made 4 big rolled lines to make a base so that the ball would balance in it but it had to be a bridge so we put a piece of paper under the ball so that it looked like the ball was touching it but it wasn't. The lady who does the youth group for us works at my school as well, so i asked her what we were doing this week, she said she didnt know and that me and my friends should think about it, so we did, and came up with easter egg hunt, so like there are 10 people in a group and there are five groups, so she buys 50 small cream eggs and hides them, but puts a little sticker on them that are different colours for each group so you have to go find all your groups eggs and the first people back get a bag of mini eggs to share out between them and the ones they found then the rest get their egg that they found so in the end you all get a chocolate egg. Anyway im tired so going to watch Crimianl Minds bye xxxxxxxxxxxxx

The News Everyone Wants To Know

Hello again,

I am very sorry for all those people who do NOT want to here this news :D but I decided to write it on the blog for those who did want to know. This week we had sexuality and yes it was the week with the condom on the carrot there isn't really anything to say about it apart from it was TOTALLY DISGUSTING, why you ask? well because, well YOU SHOULD KNOW! :D Oh fine I'll tell you, it was disgusting because it was oily, the oil was called "lubrication" my teacher has told us that the oil is to make it slip on "ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww", anyway next subject pleaseeeeeeeeeeee,

So Alex's birthday party, we went swimming it was awesome, me my friend and Georgia pretended to be mermaids, lol (laugh out loud) and we swam away from each other in the rapids as if we were being taken away in the current and we had to save each other. After that we went on the hydro slides they were cool to, we went together because there was 3 of us we had turns with each other so after wards i had gone with my friend on both slides and with Georgia, so yeah we all had 2 turns together on both slides so yeah u get me well i hope u do because if you don't never mind!!!

After swimming we went to Riccarton Mall and chose what we wanted for lunch, Alex and his 2 friends had K.F.C and me and my friend had McDonald's and Georgia had Chicken Korma, I'm not sure what mom and dad had, anyways speak soon, when i have more news, love England for ever bye xxxxxxxxxx

Chinese Lantern Festival

Busy, is the word I would best use to describe this event. Don't get me wrong, we had a good time and the lanterns were great; the park was covered in them, it made for a great spectical. The entertainment was also good, if you could find a suitable vantage point, but the queue for food and even just trying to move around on occasions was too much like being in the UK - lol.

It's amazing how quickly you get used to the lack of people (and traffic). If we had done this event straight after arriving, we would have been fine about it. Nothing worse than being down at St.Andrews on derby day, but it was a shock to the system this time around. I still can't get used to the fact that "Asian" here, is a term used to describe people of Chinese or similar origin. It's caught me out more than once.

Chorus Cicada

Wow these things are noisy. We had a picnic, one hot summer weekend during February and were frankly deafened by the noise. At this point, not having a clue what they were, I was told by a friend that they were crickets!

As you can see, we got some video and some still pictures of the bug like skins that crawl out of the ground (having lived there for 14 years). Eventually we also tracked down a drying out adult on a low branch, so we were able to do some research on the internet, see Chrous Cicada or this one for more information. We've youtubed our video so that you can see it here, but its also in the video album.

Horse riding

Georgia has started riding and horsemanship lessons on a Saturday. We went to see the lady a couple of weeks back and found out all about the layout of the lessons and what is expected. The lesson itself lasts for 30 mins, but Georgia has asked if she can stop on to help out and learn more about working with animals and horses. She now has an 8:30 start every Saturday, going through to mid afternoon, when we pick her up.

I'm pretty sure she is enjoying herself, but I will let her tell you all about it :)

Tuesday 10 March 2009

Scouts

Alex has joined the local cub scouts! He seems to be really enjoying himself, and its really cute to watch the pack closing ceremony when I pick him up.

From what I can gather a new lady has taken over (I think she started the same time as Alex). She is clearly very experienced with cubs and is introducing a lot of things that cubs should be doing....like lowering and raising the flag, tying knots, having Sixers and Seconders and knowing the cub scout law. The strange thing is that non of the existing cubs seems to have come across this before and they all look very bewildered.

World Buskers Festival

Set over 10 days during February, the streets and parks of Christchurch were filled with street entertainers from all over the world during the World Buskers Festival. SOme of the shows were pretty spectacular, espcially in the Aerial Park. There was also a section with acts especially for Kids. I think we have some video somewhere in the ever growing video section of the albums (don't worry they are all short clips or around 2 mins) but in the mean time, you can check out Christchurch

ITS A MIRACLE SOMEONE APART FROM DAD IS WRITING

Hey everybody,

well do i have some news for you, my sister has started horse riding and my brother has started rock climbing and cubs, so im going to look at St.Johns this coming Thursday and i am also going to look at Girl Guides soon.

I went swimming with some people from my school, it was like racing you could choose your race and choose wether to be in none competitive or competitive, so i chose none competitive because i didnt know how fast the people were that i was racing against. So i went into None - competitive and the races, backstroke and freestyle, i was sooooo nervous. I went to my first race which was Freestyle and surprisingly i came THIRD WOOOHOOOOO, i was loving it so i signed up for breaststroke now to it was my time for backstroke and then breaststroke and for both i got nothing........................just joking i got............................FIRST IN BOTH OF THEM, now i am gobsmacked and reallyyyyyyyy happy. And now i have a green 3rd and two blue 1st ribbons in my room. If we do it again i'll probally do competitive but i may get into zones and have to race other school (biting finger nails) but i am soooo happy.

In a weekend or a school day off or something we went to the willow bank reserve, it was sooo cool, a gorilla posed for us and i touched a slimmy eel, it was weird.

Now it is just about tea time and we are having, poppadoms, chicken, salad, rice, and a tomato and onion thing, it looks yummy.

A couple of weeks ago we saw some people from England (you all know who it is just for safety) because they came over for a wedding and they booked into a hotel in Christchurch so we went to visit them i was sooo excited and it was soooooooo good, im so happy we saw someone, cant wait till more people come over and visit.

Im thinking about my Birthday Party and Birthday List, maybe i went a bit too expensive on the list, Ipod touch, sky box, dvd player............lol (laugh out loud)!

Well we all good and feeling new and fresh.........well let me rephrase that i have no idea wether everyone is new and fresh but they all good, I, in that matter, as sticky like a toffee apple, hot like a baked potato but apart from that as healthy as a horse lol (laugh out loud) im good thanks, hope you guys are too!

Must go tea time and i think this is long enough, lol (laugh out loud)

Okains Bay

On our recent trip to Old Chorlton Hall we stopped off at Okains Bay, which was a couple of km's around the headland, down an unsealed road. Having just cleaned the car the day before, the once sparkling Fiesta looked as though it had been on a trip to the jungle, but the beacj was fantastic and the kids really enjoyed themselves. Pics of the kids are in the family album. More views from the area can be seen in the Banks Peninsula Views Album

Queen Victoria

The Queen Victoria found its way to Lyttelton a week or so ago. We went along to see her in the knowledge that Shaun and Jane would be aboard later in the year, having a trip in "the med".

She is quite a big ship and dwarfed the containers that were unloading further up the wharf. Some pictures are in the Port of Lyttelton Albums and there is also some video too

So much to do

We've had such a lot on over the last few weeks, that I've not been able to keep up on the blog. I was hoping to use today to catch up as this weekend was scheduled for rain, but alas the sun is out again (lol) so we have a date with the "summer festival of relaxing weekends" in the Botanical Gardens. Nicki has a tenuous link to one of todays musical performers, so we'll see how she does....and I'll tell you all about it in 4 or 5 weeks time - lol :)

Our first UK visitors

Last week we had our first visitors from the UK. Chris and Gloria had a couple of weeks on a whirlwind tour of New Zealand, and had roughly an 8 hour stop over in Christchurch (primarily to sleep I hasten to add!) Forutnately, we were able to meet up and join them for "room service".

A couple of pics have made it through to the "new" family album. I hope you guys enjoyed the rest of your tour!

Work day

Georgia has a work day to arrange for Thursday for a school fundraiser. She was hoping to get into a local vets, but none of the local one's are happy to entertain the idea. So she will try a couple of petshops and the local "cookie factory" (I can't think of the incentive for working there!)

Hopefully, something will come of it, but time is running out and at this rate, she could be in school for the day :(

Little River A&P Show

We dropped down to Little River A&P show (think Canwell Show) last week on a gloriously sunny but extremely hot day. There were sheep trials, horse events and demonstrations by the fire brigade, as well as a marching band complete with bagpipes. We took the dogs too due to the heat, and they seemed to get on well with the chickens that were on show. More is at the Little River Gallery

Waitangi Day

Another bank holiday in the summer sun ;) (Although, I understand some of you joined us in a day off, due to snow). This time we went to Willow Bank Wildlife Reserve.

They had a special open day with activities including Maori music and feeding the eels. It was good to go and you get to see some great animals, including the obligatory Kiwi's but I don't think I'd pay full price to get in with a family of 5. You can see some pics at Willowbank Gallery

Old Chorlton Hall

Today was very interesting. Mum had a leaflet for Devonshire Teas in Little Akaloa near Akaroa
When we got there it looked like a deserted old house. (It's 125 years old). It looked empty and I could see shadows walking past the inside kitchen door and we were going to go but then Alex knocked once more on the door.

Then an old man came to the door and he couldn't walk properly. I couldn't see his feet so the way he was walking looked like he was floating. It was very creepy and none of us really wanted to go in now but we had to. When we got in we all just thought, waht on earth are we in for?

The furniture was, erm, strange. It was like you were 125 years back in time. The man showed us into the two bedrooms, one had a great view of the sea. There were also some books laid on a table for display. The man and woman actually live there and run their business there. No one else was here so we thought we had made a mistake coming.

We sat down at the table with the old china and the woman bought out a pot of tea (it was nice english breakfast tea), apricot jam, strawberry jam (which was 'a bit runny because I only made it at 1am last night' apparently), cream, butter and then about 24 hot scones! I was thinking it was like a cup of tea and one scone each so I was a bit suprised at how many there were.

As we ate, it got better because the tea and scones were really yummy and we got used to the wierd furniture and atmosphere.

The woman, Chris, said Dad looked familiar but we thought nothing of it.

We realised we didn't have cash on us and they didn't take card but Chris said it was fine, we could send a cheque. When we were VERY full we went to go and Chris gave us a leaflet with the information on for the cheque.

Dad said to Chris is that your last name? and she said yes and dad said your joking we might be related and showed her his card with his surname on. It turned out we have the same surname, then I remebered Chris thought Dad looked familiar! Spooky.

She asked us where we were from and she is from England too-Berkshire. She told Bob, the man and he said do you have the hidden wealth? Apparently the family has a hidden treasure somewhere- we agreed to split it when we found it :). She then asked us what schools we go to. When I said Lincoln she said that their neighoburs son got married to a Lincoln teacher on Thursday, my social studies teacher!

She said leave your number on the cheque and maybe we couyld go for dinner one day

That day was very strange indeed. If we hadn't of gone in, or Alex hadn't of knocked, or Dad had had cash, we would of never known any of that. In the end I decided I liked the spooky little place and people after all. And the scones were yummy!

What did they do?

There is a long list of what the kids got up to while off with Nicki the week or two before they went back to school. We know about the bluberry picking because you saw the chick clip, but they also did some Raspberry picking and eventually got to see Jellie Park (however I think that was a disappointment, due to the strange layout where kids rund from mud and dirt to pool and the ducks poo in the water).

Then there were trips to the library as well as shopping for uniform and books. Alex got taken to the beach for the day with some mates and Georgia and Abi went to see Twilight.

Friday 6 February 2009

ASB Classic Sparks

Held in Hagley Park in Christchurch, a pleasant night of entertainment with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and a range of medeley's from musicals including Abba, Miss Saigon and Sweeney Todd. The night concluded with an amazing firework display to the William Tell Overture. We thought you might like to see a clip below.

Back to school

Everyone is back to school today after goodness knows how long off for summer holidays. We got some bits of uniform over the weekend and purchased everyones books and stationery last week. I have to go in today to get some of the excersie books that can only be purchased from school.

Alex is currently getting dressed and organising his PE kit. Georgia has left for the bus - there is a new company doing it this year and they seem to be disorganised. Abi however, was ready hours ago in an effort to get her latest book finished before leaving! (only 6 pages left and she is not moving until its finished.)

Blueberry picking

During last week Nicki and the kids went blueberry picking. If you take a look at the Picassa video gallery, you can see how they got on - there is a great clip with Alex doing a guided tour!

They also came across this little chick in a nest, which was such a great moment, I thought I would put it on youtube for everyone to see.

Book those tickets now

January and February are traditionally the bargain times to book tickets for NZ, even if you fly out later in the year. Currently Emirates will take you from Birmingham to Christchurch for 750 GBP RETURN. That's door to door!

Cheaper offers are available from other airports (549 Heathrow/Auckland fly April to June or during November), but there seems little point at that price. Book by the 31 January and fly out between 10 April and 10 July.

Another weekend gone

Not sure where it went, really. Saturday morning Georgia and I did the shopping run....Pak N Save for supermarket shopping, Countdown (which also trades as Woolworths - yes we still have one;) ) for the rest of the stuff that we like (mayo that tastes like UK salad cream and a nice tomato sauce). Pacific Catch for the 'fush' and Raewards for the fruit, veg and meat.

We dropped off Sherbet for a haircut before we left and picked her up on the way back at the same place Toffee was done, shortly after they arrived from the UK.

Saturday night, Alex had a friend over for the night and Sunday we went raspberry picking and dodged the hail and storms, before collecting Nicki's car ready for work.

Our BBQ today had 2 new items, never before cooked in our household. Homemade burgers (made by Georgia) that were beyond fantastic and come highly recommended and a local fish called Warehou. It's a firm flesh and has fantastic flavour and went down really well with a nice little cous cous salad Nicki knocked up. Remind me when you visit and we will get you sampling the delights of what is my favourite fish so far.

Holiday update

Nicki has been on holiday this week and from what I can gather her and the kids have had great fun while I've been at work. So much so that none of them have had time to update the blog! I will try and summarise their week with a few posts over the coming days.

At the moment I'm uploading several more videos that they took during their escapades. It looks like they had fun on their adventures. Let me know what you think.

Lazy weekend

Not us.... the theme of the weekend activity! Friday night, as usual was shopping night. I collected Nicki from work afterwards (she was on a late) and decided that I had better fill up with petrol (the computer was showing 9km remaining!).

Saturday was mix of cleaning and cooking. Georgia did a nice pudding, Nicki a great quiche.

Sunday we took a day trip to Christchurch for one of the "Lazy Weekend" concerts. There are a series of 16 free concerts over 8 weeks, in the botanical gardens.

Friday 9 January 2009

It's hot! Damned hot!

Roads have melted, offices have closed and people are down on the beach having a party! Why? Well Christchurch has topped (unofficially anyway) its highest ever January temperature, with highs of 40C recorded by some personal weather stations.

The MetService measured air temperature "officially" up to 35.7C at Christchurch Airport yesterday afternoon, close to the January record high of 35.9C in 1979. But the airport is out of the city, so its cooler due to the fields and airflow. City temperatures recorded 42 in one instance.

The "feels like" factor woudl have been higher too as this takes into account humidity and the effect of hot tarseal, high density housing and metal roofs, which all make us feel hotter.

2009 - NEW YEAR

HI,

How are you all? Im good are you having a nice Winter? Well im having a fantastic summer :) The last couple of days we had a water fight. So how is Everyone liking 2009? I'm loving it, it very sunny and very weird but some days its too hot and i miss the rain, i mean it does rain but not as much as England!

What did all of you do for New Year!? We had some champagne at midnight and spoke to family on Skype on the computer! It was very nice to see everyone!

We also had some snacks out on the table such as Shapes (which are like crisps) and nuts. It was all very good. But we didn't have a party with other people because mom had work the next day so we kept it quiet for her.

As it struck midnight fireworks went off and the all of a sudden the alarm at the fire Engine went of! Whoops someone probally caught the grass on fire or planted an upside down firework!

Well I'll write again soon

Bottle Lake beach

You may remember that shortly after we arrived, we found Bottle Lake Forest. Well this time we headed for the beach beyond the forest, during a swealtering day last week. Again the dogs went with us, but Nicki, this time, was working. It was nice to cool off in the surf and even Toffee had her first attempt at swimming in the sea. More pics are in the BLFP and the family galleries.

New Feature: Video gallery

After a few days of struggle trying to get the Google servers to accept our video uploads, we finally have a small collection on offer! They cover a little bit of our Christmas and New Year holidays. So, if you want the link to the video gallery, please email me and I will send you all you need to know to get access.

Of course, now that we know it works, we'll be taking time out to video some more events to keep you up-to-date with the latest happenings.

Storms

This weekend has seen our first NZ thunderstorm. We had torrential rain, hail and some localised flash flooding. Most of the lightning was sheet, but there were a couple of nice cloud to ground strikes locally. The image is from the Rolleston Gallery and shows Mammatus cloud after the storm had passed.

Saturday 3 January 2009

PYO

We found a PYO last week and decided to give Cherry picking a go. It was $3 each to get in, so everyone was under strict orders to each as much as they could! We picked dark cherries and white cherries and saw some huge apple cherries, which were literally apple sized. We had a great time and Alex enjoyed climbing the tripod ladders to get the highest cherries!

We brought home a large bag and if that wasn't enough we also stopped by the farm shop and bought some apricots, strawberries, plums and peaches. It still didn't last more than a couple of days.

Christmas parties

Now we've had so many works Christmas events that they all merge into one. It's certainly a time for celebrations and get togethers in this part of the world. Things kicked off with the official Christmas meal, which I mentioned at Busy Weekends. It was a very successful evening and one I would do again. Everyone was very pleasent and welcoming to Nicki and I, the food was great and even better, the wine was free - lol.

Then came the staff BBQ afternoon on the lawn with beers, followed by the morning tea event with Christmas nibbles and a host of goodies from suppliers, oh and don't forget the social "end of year" evening bbq organised by my manager, then there was Nicki's colleagues Christmas bbq last weekend, which we all thoroughly enjoyed too.

Now perhaps you can understand why it went a bit quiet on the blog on the run up to Christmas - lol

Happy New Year

Yes, we are the first ones again ;) It has its advantages!

We would all like to wish our avid readers, friends and family a super New Year. It's going to be hard to top 2008, in terms of what we've done. Moved house, moved country, changed jobs, schools, cars, shops, banks ....... the list is endless.

Hopefully 2009 will be a bit quieter and allow for some relaxation and perhaps it will be an opportunity for a few of you to escape the UK depression and pop in to say hello. Well, you never know.

The kids start off the year in style (they still have 4 weeks holiday). I'm back to work, while Nicki gets a week off next week, which will be good.

Don't forget to keep in touch, whether it's by phone, email, skype, msn or good old fashioned letter!
