Wow these things are noisy. We had a picnic, one hot summer weekend during February and were frankly deafened by the noise. At this point, not having a clue what they were, I was told by a friend that they were crickets!

As you can see, we got some video and some still pictures of the bug like skins that crawl out of the ground (having lived there for 14 years). Eventually we also tracked down a drying out adult on a low branch, so we were able to do some research on the internet, see Chrous Cicada or this one for more information.
